In an effort to implement habitat improvements on Fountain Creek in Manitou Springs, the Cheyenne Mountain Chapter of Trout Unlimited has partnered with the Fountain Creek Restoration Committee (FCRC). The FCRC has developed a broad based coalition in support of these restoration efforts. This coalition has worked for more than a year to develop a strategic plan for restoring the degraded
environment of Fountain Creek through Manitou Springs. The committee and its partners plan to restore riparian and aquatic wildlife habitat, as well as improve fishing access and trails along the creek.
CMCTU has supported the FCRC both financially and by being a partner on the FCRC board. CMCTU Board Members Sam Humpert, VP of projects and Jack Hunter, Director at Large both sit on the FCRC board. The FCRC has come a long way in the year it has been in place. That hard work and dedication is coming to fruition as the FCRC plans to launch the first demonstration project on Fountain Creek later this year. This project will be implemented on the creek adjacent to Soda Springs Park in Manitou Springs. This project is funded jointly through a generous Fishing is Fun Grant from the Colorado Division of Wildlife, $8000.00 dollars in private citizen & business donations, $3000.00 from the City of Manitou Springs and $4000.00 from CMCTU. Our portion came from two chapter resources. $1000.00 in the form of a GOMO Grant we were awarded from Colorado Trout Unlimited specifically for the Fountain Creek project and $3000.00 from the local chapter raffle funds raised in last years rod and gear raffle. The FCRC, CMCTU and the other partners plan to complete this project by the end of May 2008. Watch for volunteer opportunities on the CMCTU website and in future news letters. Recently, CMCTU was recognized by the FCRC as a major donor. CMCTU President Greg Walck, Director at Large Sherryl Walck, VP of Projects Sam Humpert and Director at LargeJack Hunter were on hand at a public meeting in Manitou Springs to receive the award from the head of the FCRC, Ken Jaray. Ken thanked CMCTU for its financial support and partnership in the FCRCs efforts to restore Fountain Creek. Ken went on to say that he and the FCRC hoped for continued partnership with CMCTU on future projects and that he looked forward to meeting some of our members on the volunteer days planned for the Soda Springs Project in May. The Soda Springs Park demonstration project is just the first in a line of many projects the FCRC has planned. The FCRC Master Plan is a comprehensive document developed by the FCRC which outlines the committee’s plans for restoration of Fountain Creek in Manitou Springs from “Arch to Arch”. Go to the FCRC web site to review the master plan and other relevant documents pertaining to the FCRCs work and future plans or to donate to the current and future projects. Other FCRC projects in the pipeline include the rebuilding of the inlet structure on Shriver Pond near the Manitou City Pool. Your chapter has applied for a national Trout Unlimited “Embrace-AStream” grant to support this Shriver Pond Project. There is also a stream restoration project proposed on the Fields Park section between Beckers Lane and Highway 24 planned for the near future. As most of our chapter members know, Fountain Creek is a valuable and precious natural resource. Modifications to the surrounding landscape have altered natural ecosystems, in some cases permanently. Collaboration between public and private stakeholders is critical to restoration projects, balancing urban pressures with the strong desire to enhance Fountain Creek. A key issue in restoring local stretches of Fountain Creek in Manitou Springs is the need to ensure upstream conditions do not degrade other restoration efforts. The FCRCs goal is to foster collaboration with government, business, private citizens and other concerned organizations such as Trout Unlimited as stakeholders working together to pursue habitat restoration efforts all along the Fountain Creek watershed. With better water quality and management of the headwaters of Fountain Creek, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and other Arkansas River communities will find their restoration efforts a little easier. The Fountain Creek Restoration Committee is committed to these efforts. Their Mission and Vision for the creek are clear and represent the passion of this organization to restore this wonderful local resource for education, recreation, wildlife and fishing for everyone in Colorado. MISSION STATEMENT:To restore and revitalize the Fountain Creek ecosystem in Manitou Springs for fishing, recreation and wildlife habitat.VISION STATEMENT:Fountain Creek will provide a sustainable fishery as it flows through Manitou Springs. It will be a healthy riparian habitat for aquatic and other wildlife. Fountain Creek will be an aesthetically pleasing natural environment for viewing wildlife and other recreational uses.Tax Deductible Donations to FCRC can be sent to P.O. Box 868, Manitou Springs, CO 80829. Please make checks payable to the Pikes Peak Community Foundation and note FCRC on the Memo section of the check. |
